Relocate the 9-story 90-unit Low-Income Housing Project from 160 Freelon St.
Relocate the 9-story 90-unit Low-Income Housing Project from 160 Freelon St.
The Issue
Living on Freelon Street has unique challenges. It is a dead-end street with limited two-way access and residential parking on the north side. The Muni T-Line installation further limited access to Freelon from 4th street, which no longer has parking available. Freelon Street serves not only its residential permit-holders but also is a daily stop for patrons of nearby businesses, rideshare vehicles, and food deliveries. There's no room for turnaround.
The situation is about to become more complicated. A plan by Related California is in motion to construct a 9-story 90-unit low-income housing building at 160 Freelon St. However, the choice of location raises significant concerns. The influx of residents will inevitably exacerbate the already problematic traffic and parking situation.
According to a survey from the US Census Bureau, as of 2020, approximately 44.9% of households in our area have one vehicle, and 37.4% have two or more (Source: US Census Bureau, "Number of vehicles per household"). Adding 90 units in an area already strained for space will only escalate these challenges for its residents.
Let's appeal to Related California and relevant local authorities to consider relocating this low-income housing project to a more appropriate location. One with easier access to major streets could better serve the needs of the resulting population increase, without overburdening the current Freelon Street residents.
Support us in keeping Freelon Street livable and able to effectively cater to its residents. Please, sign this petition to respectfully voice our practical concerns to those making decisions that affect our daily lives.
