Relocate Texas A&M Nursing Lectures to HPEB

The Issue

My Texas A&M nursing cohort and I are currently attending lectures in a hall situated 25 minutes away from our main campus. This commute and struggle to find parking contributes to frustration and fatigue for us. The lecture hall itself does not accommodate 6 hours of lecture daily, and 13 hours of lecture within a 48 hour period.

The chairs are small and uncomfortable, and honestly, not created to accommodate 3+ hour lectures. Without nearby outlets, our ability to keep laptops and other digital devices charged is restricted. Countless people are facing the issue of their note taking device dying in the middle of lecture, which is a detrimental learning obstacle. The room is cramped, leaving little room for personal space, and further taking away from our ability to focus on lectures. Ultimately, it is very hard to pay attention in a lecture, much less for hours on end when physically uncomfortable. As busy, already overwhelmed nursing school students, an uncomfortable learning setting should not be an added burden. It's imperative for us, as future nurses, to engage deeply with our studies, and our current environment significantly hinders this critical aspect of our education.

A much better option exists on the actual TAMU College of Nursing campus in the Health Professions Education Building (HPEB). This lecture hall is not only more spacious but also equipped with charging stations and ample room to maneuver. There are aisles that students can stand in to stretch their legs during lecture, room to walk to your desk without having to crawl over other students and bags, microphones located at the desks so that we can hear our peers' questions and comments. Many of us remember the comfort and efficiency of this hall from our orientation. And if this location is not an option, a classroom of this style, wherever it may be located, would be greatly appreciated for the sake of our studies.

As Texas A&M students, we feel that we deserve to attend our classes on property that is fully tied to Texas A&M University. Many of us were taken aback that we were not aware of the change in where our classes would take place until after the application and admission process. We were all very eager to be learning at the relatively new and well equipped CON's campus and to experience our classes in the location specifically dedicated to our studies. This building is a very large appeal of A&M's nursing program.

Lastly, we want to convey that all of this comes from a place of passion and excitement to learn. We are only two weeks in but already truly love our professors and admire their knowledge, kindness, and willingness to work with us as we navigate this new time. We deeply appreciate all that has already been done for us, we just felt that it was necessary to strongly convey our concerns as it affects our learning.
