I'm a huge fan of Halloween. Like many of you, I know that this holiday is a special time for children, families, and the community. Halloween should be an occasion full of joy, where children can go trick-or-treating and communities can hold celebrations without the constraints of a typical weekday night. It's a shame, then, when this lively celebration is stifled.

Currently, Halloween falls on October 31st, regardless of the day of the week. The problem with this? More often than not, Halloween falls on a weekday—when children have school and parents have work the next day. The impact of this is a limitation on the time we spend celebrating, and significant reduction in community participation.

To improve this, I propose that Halloween be moved to the last Friday in October. Fridays naturally usher in the weekend, allowing families to stay out later and communities to celebrate longer without worry for the following day's obligations.

Consider this: a survey by the National Confectioners Association found that 52% of young parents say Halloween is their favorite holiday to spend with their families, surpassing even Christmas (The Washington Post, 2019). With this adjustment in date, we'd give more working families a chance to participate fully in Halloween - a change that about 70% of mothers and fathers said would maximize the fun of the holiday (The Atlantic, 2013).

It's clear that this change would allow a more relaxed, lengthy celebration of Halloween, providing greater community involvement and enjoyment for families. So, let's embrace the spirit of Halloween fully, and let our voices be heard in declaring that Halloween should fall on the last Friday of October.
