Relocate Adult-Themed NSFW Books from Young Adult Sections in Retail Stores

The issue

I am deeply concerned as I have a younger sibling who is an avid reader and frequently picks books from the 'Young Adult' section in retail stores like Kmart and Big W. What I have recently discovered is the inappropriate placement of explicit adult content, namely, 18+ Not-Safe-for-Work (NSFW) books within this section. This narrative may seem personal, but it is an issue that impacts many families nationwide.

It is not uncommon to find these adult-themed books in this section due to their misleading cartoonish covers, which can easily attract younger readers. They often contain mature content, sometimes bordering on explicit, which is highly unsuitable for young minds. It's a great injustice to unwitting under-aged readers who are unknowingly exposed to adult-themed content.

This issue calls for an immediate course correction. It's urgent that these retail stores take responsibility for their poor content placement and ensure that books and other materials meant for adults are not accessible to children or young adult categories. Retailers need to be more vigilant about age ratings on books, just as they would be with other forms of media like video games or movies.

The urgency is amplified when we consider the fact that teen reading habits have been shown to influence their behaviors and development. According to the American Psychological Association, teenagers who read explicit material are more likely to have earlier sexual experiences and unfavorable attitudes and behaviors (APA, 2017).

It is the fundamental right of every child to be protected from inappropriate content. This petition wants to ensure that all 18+ NSFW books are promptly moved out of the young adult sections in all stores. We are urging Kmart, Big W, and other retail stores to take immediate action to protect underage readers from exposure to explicit adult content.
