The Issue

I am one of many Doctor Who fans who is extremely disappointed that the UK Series 5 DVD and Blu-ray releases include edits of all thirteen episodes, which notably omit the Next Time trailers and replace the BBC "blocks" logo with the BBC Worldwide variant in the openings, with The Eleventh Hour being the only episode to receive the most number of edits. This unfortunately remains an ongoing issue, because the broadcast versions (as originally transmitted on BBC One in 2010) have never received any physical home media releases, and are only available to watch on BBC iPlayer and purchase on iTunes (via Apple TV).

As reported by Radio Free Skaro, back in 2010, 2Entertain Programming Manager Ally Ward responded to customer complaints that the decision to exclude the trailers "was made at Executive level in 2009." No official explanation from BBC Worldwide was given to the general public at the time.

The latest Series 5 physical release is the 2020 Steelbook, which can only be purchased through third-party sellers. It contains edited versions of the episodes that were available on streaming platforms (e.g. Netflix, HBO Max), but slowed from the standard 25fps speed to 23.976fps with pitch correction. While these edits keep the Next Time trailers intact, they retain the redundant BBC Worldwide branding and omit the BBC Cymru Wales endboard altogether.

When you see the BBC Worldwide logo at the beginning of a programme, this means the integrity of the programme has been compromised in some way. The Doctor Who community in particular is known for not tolerating changes or edits, so by releasing an edited version, BBC Worldwide has proven that they did not take programme integrity or fan outcry into account.

If you would like further details on the subject, please read my article and watch the following videos below (and on YouTube for the descriptions).

And please also consider emailing DVD enquiries at BBC Studios to request for The Complete Fifth Series to be re-released on DVD and Blu-ray, citing the various edits and errors in my article and videos. All episodes and special features running at the correct speed of 25fps with the Next Time trailers and the BBC "blocks" logo intact, and BBC Worldwide logo and ident omitted altogether.

This would be a perfect opportunity for Doctor Who fans and casual viewers alike to own a physical copy of the episodes as originally broadcast, without the redundant BBC Worldwide branding.

To be clear: The programme that our license fee pays for should be the same version the same license fee-payers should be able to watch in our preferred way. Not a version which has been martyred for commercial or executive reasons.
