On May 20, Savannah police officers took a woman to the ground during an arrest outside the McDonald’s on Skidaway Road. A bystander filmed the takedown and shared it online, raising public concern.

The police report says officers were responding to a call about a man with metal pipes. It also says the woman was resisting arrest and was taken down by an officer before being handcuffed.

The mayor of Savannah has now called for an investigation. He said the video shows only part of what happened and that body camera footage and written reports will help determine if the force used was appropriate.

We believe the public has a right to see that full footage. We’re asking the Savannah Police Department to release all body camera video from the incident and to explain clearly how use-of-force policies are being followed.
