The Issue

I love animals, and my recent visit to the Utica Zoo left me with a heavy heart. Among the many animals, the beaver caught my attention with its heartbreaking attempts to escape its enclosure. I witnessed it chewing on the metal fencing, trying fervently to dig through the concrete under the fence, and gazing at me with an expression that screamed for help. I can't understand how anyone could see such desperation and still keep it locked away. It's truly sad.

Beavers are inherently wild creatures that thrive in natural environments. They are known for their industrious nature, constantly building and maintaining their habitats. Holding them captive in an enclosure, devoid of a real pond or the materials they need to construct their dams, strips away their natural instincts and ability to live fulfilling lives.

Moreover, evidence suggests that captivity can cause significant stress and behavioral issues in animals like beavers. According to various studies, animals in captivity often display signs of depression and anxiety, evidenced through behaviors like the ones I witnessed. This is not only harmful to the animal's well-being but also diminishes the educational value for visitors seeing a distressed animal exhibit unnatural behaviors.

Understanding the importance of animal welfare and ensuring that every creature lives a life it deserves is something we, as a community, should stand for. The Utica Zoo has the opportunity to set a precedent by reevaluating their practice of housing beavers in such conditions.

I urge the Utica Zoo to consider the welfare of this beaver and similar animals, and relocate them to appropriate wildlife sanctuaries where they can live as nature intended. Not only will this improve their quality of life, but it will also enhance the educational experience for visitors who can learn about beavers in a more humane and ethical setting.

Join me in asking the Utica Zoo to release this beaver to a sanctuary that suits its needs. Let's be the voice for those who cannot speak and make a lasting impact. Please sign this petition and help advocate for the beaver's release to a more suitable environment.
