Release Rasta David and respect his cultural rights
The Issue
Rasta David, a 71-year-old American citizen who has called Batokunku in The Gambia, his home, is facing an unjust plight. Arrested within the bounds of his own compound for allegedly possessing cannabis, David now finds himself looking at an uncertain future behind the bars of Mile 2 Prison. What’s even more heartrending is the threat to cut his dreadlocks, a symbol of his Rastafarian identity, which he has faithfully maintained since his youth.
David's connection to Batokunku stretches back to his childhood, where he is remembered fondly by residents. Known for his peaceful demeanor and adherence to the Rastafarian way of life, David's lifestyle is deeply rooted in cultural and religious beliefs. To forcibly cut his dreadlocks not only disrespects his personal ethos but also violates his human rights.
The Rastafari International Unity Coordinator, Chief Iakongoi, stands firm that the lifestyle and beliefs of Rastafarians have long been recognized globally. Yet, colonial laws still haunt their existence, causing undue hardship and discrimination. For David, being subjected to lose part of his identity due to outdated laws is a glaring injustice.
Globally, there has been a significant shift in the understanding and acceptance of Rastafarian culture and the personal use of cannabis. Countries around the world are adopting more enlightened perspectives, recognizing the cultural significance rather than criminalizing those who live differently.
We urge the authorities in The Gambia to respect Rasta David's right to maintain his cultural identity and to release him immediately. This plea is an urgent request to bring justice to a man whose rights have been infringed upon.
Sign this petition to stand in support of cultural freedom and human dignity, and to call for the release of Rasta David. It is time to honor beliefs, not punish them.
