The Issue

Payton Gendron's actions on May 14, 2022, resulted in the tragic loss of ten lives in Buffalo, New York. This event is an undeniable tragedy and deeply impacted the community and beyond. However, seeking justice does not mean forsaking our principles of humanity and redemption. Ending Gendron's life via the death penalty will not bring back the victims or ease the pain of their families.

A life sentence without the possibility of parole is a viable and just alternative to the death penalty. It ensures that Gendron will never be a threat to society, while still holding him accountable for his reprehensible actions. This approach allows room for reflection, rehabilitation, and acknowledgement of wrongdoing. It also aligns with international human rights perspectives which argue against the use of the death penalty as a form of justice.

Moreover, data from the Death Penalty Information Center shows that the cost of the death penalty is significantly higher than life imprisonment without parole. The resources spent on prolonged legal processes and appeals could be redirected to victim support services and community healing initiatives.

It is time to reconsider and reshape our approach to justice—a justice that prioritizes life, even when faced with the grievous wrongs. Stand with us in advocating for Payton Gendron to receive a life sentence without parole instead of the death penalty. Every voice matters in pushing for a system that favors restorative over retributive justice.

Join us in this call for action and sign this petition to influence those in power to choose life imprisonment over the death penalty for Payton Gendron. Together, we can reshape societal attitudes toward the death penalty and strive towards a more humane society.
