Release "My Sister Sam" On DVD
The issue
From 1986 to 1988 “My Sister Sam” was on television and after two seasons the series was canceled. It was produced by Pony Productions which was founded by series star Pam Dawber (“Mork and Mindy”). It also starred Jenny O’Harra (“Mystic River”), Joel Brooks ("Indecent Proposal"), David Naughton (“An American Werewolf in London”), and Rebecca Schaeffer ("Scenes From The Class Struggle in Beverly Hills”)
It had notable guest appearances such as Scott Bacula (“Star Trek: Enterprise” and “Quantum Leap”) and Carol Ann Susi (Debbie Wolowitz from “The Big Bang Theory") and the series had Primetime Emmy Award nominated directors Bert Metcalfe (“M*A*S*H") and Primetime Emmy Award Winning directors Tom Cherones (“Seinfeld”). Tom Cherones made his directorial debut with “My Sister Sam”.
However, the most important star of “My Sister Sam” was Rebecca Schaeffer (on the left in the picture above) She played the younger sister Patti Russell to Pam Dawber’s character Samantha Russell. Rebecca Schaeffer was a very talented actress who was very funny in the series and after the series was canceled she continued to get work ranging from the movies “Scenes From the Cast Struggle in Beverly Hills”, the Dyan Cannon movie “The End of Innocence” and even a guest appearance in the series “Amazing Stories”. In the episode “Two and a Half Men” star Jon Cryer, played the lead character. The series was executive produced by Academy Award-winning director Steven Speilberg.
Rebecca Schaeffer was scheduled to audition for Academy Award-winning director Francis Ford Coppola for the role of Mary Corleone in “The Godfather Part III”. Tragically on that same day, she was murdered by an obsessed fan before she could even audition in the doorway of her apartment building on July 18, 1989. She was twenty-one years old. That’s why it’s so important that “My Sister Sam” be released on DVD. It was an important stepping stone in her career and talented actresses like her shouldn’t be forgotten.
In addition to Warner Brothers Home Entertainment, Shout Factory should also consider releasing the series on DVD as they did a wonderful job of releasing “Ned And Stacey” which included episodes that didn’t even air in the States when that series was canceled. “My Sister Sam” was canceled with numerous episodes that weren’t aired for the public to see. When it comes to special features they could include new interviews with the stars, her surviving family, and the P.S.A. that brought the stars together following Rebecca Schaeffer’s death.
“My Sister Sam” was a uniquely funny sitcom that was true and honest of the time it was produced and has timeless themes of sibling rivalry and love between sisters. It deserves to be seen by the fans who loved the show back then and to have a new fan base formed for a new audience today. The youtube video link below contains the opening titles for "My Sister Sam".
