The Issue

Lucy Connolly, a devoted mother with caring responsibilities, was incarcerated for posting an inappropriate tweet. This tweet, although in poor judgement, was swiftly removed and does not reflect Lucy's generally law-abiding nature. Despite having no previous criminal convictions, Lucy was sentenced to serve time in jail.

At the same time, MP Mike Amsbury remained unincarcerated despite being accused of physically assaulting constituents. This scenario paints a stark and unfair contrast in the distribution of justice. Why should non-violent political activity incur serious legal consequences, while acts of violence by those in power receive minimal repercussions?

In the United Kingdom, between 2008 and 2016, there was a 37% increase in prosecutions for crimes linked to social media use, as per The Law Society (Law Society Gazette, 2018). This is a concerning trend implicating freedom of expression.

We ardently request the release of Lucy Connolly, and more broadly, a comprehensive review of the sentences for those imprisoned for non-violent political-related activities. We are not advocating for the disregard of the law, but for the fair and proportionate administration of justice.

This isn’t just about Lucy Connolly, but about the multitude of people who may be unjustly imprisoned for non-violent offences that do not pose a threat to society. It’s time for change.
