Julio Cesar Irungaray has spent 35 years in Utah. He works two jobs — at a movie theater and a Mexican restaurant — to support his two children. He shows up for his neighbors: at union drives, student marches, and community rallies. When people needed someone to stand beside them, Julio was there.

On Tuesday morning, as he was arriving home from the night shift, ICE agents were waiting outside his Salt Lake City home. His daughter Chantal woke up to her mother's screams. Julio was taken before he could drive Chantal to her nursing clinicals at the University of Utah.

He is now being held at a detention center in Evanston, Wyoming. Julio has diabetes. His family says ICE has his medications — but has not given them to him.

His children spoke with him by phone on Thursday. His message: "Never stop fighting, because if we stop, then ICE is going to continue abusing us."

Julio's family is actively pursuing an appeal. His only criminal record is a misdemeanor DUI from 2009 — his son says he has been sober for at least 16 years. He is a father, a worker, and a community member who has given three and a half decades to this state.

We are calling on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to release Julio Irungaray, provide his medications immediately, and allow his family's appeal to be heard.
