The Issue

Secretary Marco Rubio, Senator Adam Schiff, Senator Alex Padilla, and Representative Jimmy Gomez,

Last week, Jewish Currents reporter Emily Wilder set sail from Italy on The Conscience, a boat participating in a flotilla of journalists and aid workers that sought to travel to Gaza to report on the devastation there and deliver much-needed medical supplies. Her boat was intercepted by the Israeli government, and she is currently held in Israeli jail without charge.

We call on each of your offices to take immediate action to secure the release of Emily and the other US nationals detained from the flotilla. From reports of others in detention, we know that detainees are often subject to humiliation and abuse.

Emily's effort to travel to Gaza to report, along with that of the 140 other journalists and humanitarian aid workers with whom she traveled, was and is legally protected. Her detainment, on the other hand, is part of a blockade on Gaza that nearly every human rights organization in the world has declared a grave violation of international law. We the undersigned call for her immediate release.
