The Issue

We Stand with the GALA Youth: Defenders of Justice and Accountability

We express our unwavering support for the courageous youth of Gambia Against Looted Assets (GALA), who were illegally arrested on May 8, 2025, in Banjul for exercising their constitutional right to demand transparency and accountability.

Their call for full disclosure of assets stolen by former dictator Yahya Jammeh is a pursuit of justice, not a crime. Attempting to silence these brave truth-seekers only shields corruption, undermines the rule of law, and deepens the wounds of impunity that continue to affect our nation.

GALA’s mission reflects the aspirations of millions of Gambians who long for a transparent, accountable government committed to meaningful reform. These young voices have shown remarkable courage, embodying the spirit of active citizenship and principled resistance.

The Janneh Commission was established to uncover the financial abuses of the past regime. However, the ongoing suppression of information regarding the disposal and management of stolen assets undermines the promise of transparency and erodes the public’s trust in government institutions. Instead of applauding efforts to promote accountability, the government has chosen to unlawfully detain youth who advocate for truth.

Each day that these young activists remain in detention is a day that echoes the injustices of our painful past. It sends a chilling message to those who dare to imagine a better, fairer Gambia—one free from the grip of corruption and deceit.

We demand the immediate and unconditional release of the GALA youth. This is not merely a plea from concerned Gambians and allies worldwide; it is a necessary step toward restoring public trust, preserving peace, and reaffirming our commitment to justice and human rights.

We must protect the right to speak truth to power. We must defend those who hold leaders accountable. We must ensure that Gambia moves forward, not backward, on the path of democracy, transparency, and integrity.

Join us. Sign the petition. Stand for truth. Stand for justice. Stand for the GALA youth.
