Release Chris Tanzler!

The Issue

When Chris Tanzler was released from prison after serving almost 9 years, everyone he knew rejoiced. As a lifelong friend, I’ve always been impressed with Chris’s work ethic, and I knew he was a model inmate based upon our countless conversations. In November 2015, he began exit preparations, completing all of the appropriate classes and medical appointments required prior to discharge. Chris was released in mid-May. Little did he know, not 24 hours after he earned his freedom, it would all be taken away again. Immediately after his release, Chris reported to his probation officer accordingly, and everything appeared to be in order. He spent the rest of the evening with family, celebrating his long-awaited homecoming. The next day, he was called back into the probation office and handed documents stating that the Department of Corrections had made a clerical error and wanted to send him back to prison for another 18 months. Later that day, Chris received a phone call from his probation officer claiming his tracking device battery was dead and he needed to come back into the office. He sensed they were trying to rearrest him. Lo and behold, before he had even pulled out of his driveway, police swarmed in with a warrant for his arrest and hauled him back to prison.   Chris deserves to be free, and this injustice needs to be corrected immediately. He prepared for months, if not years, for his release. In fact, given his good behavior, he qualified to finish some of his release classes early. Additionally, Chris has proven he has become a productive member of society. During his work release at a local restaurant, he biked 14 miles 6 days a week to work. He was never late. Chris was even asked to become a manager for the restaurant once he was out of the prison system. This re-incarceration is unjustified and detrimental to his life and career. On my latest visit with him, after he had been re-incarcerated, he looked extremely defeated. I am fighting to bring him hope, and hoping this will all be over soon. Please join me in asking Governor Richard Scott, Attorney General Pam Bondi, and Representatives Mike Miller and John Mica to release Chris Tanzler from this wrongful re-incarceration.
