We call on the Ethiopian Government and Global Affairs Canada to urgently intervene for the release of Adonay Birhane Hailemichael, a Canadian citizen detained by Ethiopian Federal Police in Addis Ababa.

Adonay was arrested after appearing at the TikTok Creative Awards wearing modern fashion that authorities labeled “against cultural values.” Criminalizing clothing, creativity, or self-expression violates international human rights standards, including:

• Freedom of expression

• Protection from arbitrary arrest

• The right to due process

As a Canadian citizen, Adonay is entitled to consular access, legal protection, and humane treatment under international law. Since his arrest, no clear charges, evidence, or legal explanation have been provided.

We demand:

1. Immediate access to Adonay by Canadian consular officials

2. Transparency regarding his legal status and location

3. His immediate release or a fair legal process

Fashion is not a crime. Creativity is not a crime. Human rights must be respected.
