The Issue

I am an adoptee, and at 57 years old, I still grapple with the unanswered questions about my origins. Despite having received DNA results from Ancestry.ca, the information remains inconclusive in identifying my biological mother. Growing up as an adoptee, I've spent my life feeling like I never quite fit in, always yearning to know more about where I came from and who I truly am.

In June 2024, a promise was made to unseal adoption records to adoptees from Quebec that were previously sealed by the Catholic Church. This represented a beacon of hope for 1000's like myself. However, the process has been painstakingly slow, with a wait of over two years for most adoptees. This delay is not only frustrating but emotionally taxing, leaving us in a painful state of limbo.

Access to our adoption records is crucial for our identity, health, and well-being. It's not just about filling in the gaps of our pasts; it's about grounding our present and future. Knowing our ancestry might impact medical histories, cultural ties, and personal identity.

The time for action is now. The Quebec government must expedite this process and adhere to its promise. By releasing these records, the government can offer thousands of adoptees the closure and identity verification they so desperately seek. It’s a matter of fairness and justice, recognizing the basic human right to know one's origins.

We urge the Ministers involved, along with associated agencies, to prioritize this issue and remove the unnecessary bureaucratic hurdles preventing access to these life-changing records. This is an essential step towards healing and self-discovery for adoptees, deserving of timely attention and action.

Please sign this petition to support swift access to adoption records for all Quebec adoptees, so that they can step out from the shadows of doubt and into the light of understanding and identity.
