Sunset Blvd., the most Tony Award-nominated revival of the 2024-25 season, is far too magnificent to live only in memory. We call on The Jamie Lloyd Company to release a professional live video recording (proshot) of it in the not-too-distant future. Too many iconic shows, new or revival, have released proshots; Wicked, Hadestown, The Book of Mormon, and Gypsy are just a few of the shows whose past casts can only be seen in audience-filmed bootlegs. There are, thankfully, exceptions; a proshot of the acclaimed 2024 revival of Merrily We Roll Along was filmed for the cinema, and a few shows such as Hamilton and Frozen are available for streaming on Disney Plus. Sunset’s revival was acclaimed as “commanding and gorgeous” and “remarkable,” with a “titanic” and “career-defining” performance by Nicole Scherzinger, who won a Tony Award for her performance. The show’s composer, the legendary Andrew Lloyd Webber, has said that Nicole’s Norma Desmond is “the best performance of anything I’ve ever [made]”. The show also stars the “excellent” and “gifted” Tom Francis, who was nominated for a Tony. His rendition of the title number, “Sunset Boulevard,” which he sings while walking through the streets around the theater, is one of the most jaw-dropping feats of live theater in recent memory and must be seen, not just heard. Sunset Blvd. must never fade and become “half-forgotten” like Norma. The cast album is not enough; posterity must be able to see the brilliance of Nicole and Tom’s performances in Lloyd’s “magnetically cinematic” staging.
