Release a 67-Year-Old Navy Veteran from prison to Reunite with Family

The Issue

In 1989, I had a confrontation at a park that led to me making the biggest mistake of my life. After that night, I was convicted of attempted murder in the first degree and sentenced to life without the possibility of parole. That was 36 years ago, and since then I have been taken from Hawaii and placed in a mainland prison. I am not here to claim I am innocent; I am here to ask for forgiveness and a pardon for my mistake.

At 67 years old, I ask that I be released to spend the time I have left on earth with my children and grandchildren. Since being in prison, I have become a painter and donated many paintings to hospitals and charities. As a Navy veteran myself, I've made support groups for our vets. Additionally, I've run support groups for other inmates serving life without parole sentences and organized fundraisers donating proceeds to numerous organizations and charities.

I wasn’t able to be in my children’s lives physically, but I called them weekly since that very unfortunate night, always guiding them in the best way possible and teaching them one wrong mistake can change your entire life. People make mistakes, some mistakes being worse than others. I understand I was wrong and needed to be punished, but now after 36 years in prison, please forgive me so that I may reunite with my family. Please consider granting me clemency so that I can spend what remains of my time with family while continuing my efforts toward positive contributions outside prison walls.

The criminal justice system should also consider factors such as age, rehabilitation efforts, and time served when evaluating cases like mine. Studies show that older inmates pose less risk upon release (source: Bureau of Justice Statistics). Please sign this petition to support granting clemency so that I can live out my final years outside prison walls.
