The proposal for Development Application 13861/2025, which involves a material change of use for a special industry waste processing and renewable energy facility, has raised significant concerns among the residents of Stoney Creek, Caravonica, Kamerunga, Redlynch Valley and Lake Placid. This facility, intended to be constructed on property 1L Kamerunga Road, Barron, part of Lot 8 on SP341832, poses a grave threat to our community's well-being and safety.

Our town has already experienced the adverse effects of such facilities, with the most notorious example being the Waste Processing Facility at Portsmith. The unbearable stench from that facility has plagued its surrounding communities. Even more alarming was the recent fire incident that compromised air quality and posed significant health risks. An establishment such as this should not be placed in close proximity to residential areas, much less near a school where children are most vulnerable to pollution and other hazards.

The initial promise of economic benefits does not outweigh the safety and environmental concerns that our community faces. Studies indicate that proximity to waste processing plants is linked to higher rates of respiratory diseases, more frequent foul odors, and increased risks of accidents like fires and chemical spills. According to the Queensland Fire and Emergency Services, waste facilities have a history of fire incidents, further emphasizing the need for stringent placement policies.

We acknowledge the need for progress and sustainable solutions. Still, we firmly believe this facility will not serve the community's interests if it violates residential safety and environmental standards. Alternative sites away from densely populated areas should be considered to mitigate these risks.

We urge the Cairns Regional Council's Planning and Development team to prioritize our community's health and safety by rejecting this application. We stand ready to engage in dialogues to find more appropriate, safer solutions for waste processing and energy needs in our region.
