Reject the Spending Bill Gutting the Endangered Species Act and Stripping Protections
The Issue
The House Appropriations Committee just passed a spending bill containing 21 anti-wildlife riders — the most in history — that would strip protections from some of America's most iconic and vulnerable animals. Gray wolves. Grizzly bears. Wolverines. Northern spotted owls. Canada lynx. Lesser prairie chickens. Seven species of freshwater mussels in Texas. All thrown under the bus in a single bill.
The legislation also slashes the EPA's budget by 20% and cuts its enforcement budget by nearly half — $169 million — meaning fewer consequences for the polluters poisoning America's air, water, and land.
The Fish and Wildlife Service's listing program — the system that decides which animals receive protection under the Endangered Species Act — already faces a backlog of more than 400 species waiting for consideration. Its budget is already at the lowest level since 2004. This bill cuts it further.
Among the most dangerous riders: one that would codify climate denial into law by exempting federal land agencies from updating their plans when new scientific evidence shows endangered species are being harmed. Another blocks the reintroduction of grizzly bears in the North Cascades. Another resurrects Florida's unlawful wetland destruction program that threatens Florida panthers.
Eighty conservation groups have already demanded Congress reject this bill. We're adding our voices.
We're calling on the full House and Senate to reject this spending bill and protect the Endangered Species Act, America's wildlife, and the communities that depend on clean air and water.
