Reject the SAVE Act and Uphold the Right to Vote for All
The Issue
As a firm believer in the democratic principle of universal suffrage, I want to draw attention to the destructive impact of the Secure America's Voting Act, otherwise known as the SAVE Act. This piece of legislation establishes unnecessary barriers for many American voters, especially those in vulnerable groups such as women and disabled individuals. For women who've changed their names, perhaps due to marriage or divorce, and disabled voters who face hurdles in obtaining necessary documents, the SAVE Act proves to be a discriminatory dampener on their constitutional rights.
Our Constitution firmly guarantees the right to vote without discrimination - an integral pillar of any democratic society. However, the SAVE Act, under the disguise of securing our voting process from non-existent rampant noncitizen voting, jeopardizes this core principle. The legislation imposes an undue burden on those already marginalized, disproportionately impacting demographic groups struggling with documentation for various valid reasons.
According to an ACLU report, 25% of African-American voting-age citizens lack government-issued photo ID, compared to only 8% of whites (Source: ACLU). Furthermore, approximately 34% of women have identification that reflects an outdated name (Source: Brennan Center for Justice). These statistics demonstrate the extensive harm the SAVE Act can cause.
We appeal to members of congress to reject the SAVE Act and continue to uphold the foundational democratic right of every American citizen: the right to vote. Sign this petition to demand Congress to reject the SAVE Act and protect our constitutional right to vote for all Americans.
