I am a proud part of a nursing workforce in Kenya that constitutes 58% of the total health care workers. Our profession, with its unique demands, rewards, and challenges, is regulated by the Nursing Council of Kenya, an organization that understands us and the role we play in the overall health system of our country. The proposed merger of the Nursing Council of Kenya with other regulatory bodies raises serious concerns within our community. The fear is not unfounded—our distinctive profession cannot be regulated fairly and adequately by bodies catering to a broad spectrum of other health professions. This potential merger threatens to dilute our representation and reduces the ability of the council to address our unique needs and issues. By signing this petition, we urge the Government of Kenya, through the parliament and Ministry of Health to reconsider the proposed merger and to respect CAP 257; the Nurses and Midwives Act, which establishes and mandates Nursing Council of Kenya to regulate all nurses and midwives in Kenya.
