The Issue

A developer has proposed a massive 62,000 square-foot diesel trucking distribution center on a highly contaminated site directly across from Hillside Elementary School in Lincoln Heights, Los Angeles. This project, at 3505 Pasadena Ave, would bring hundreds of daily 18-wheeler diesel truck trips into a densely populated residential area, creating dangerous levels of air pollution, noise, and traffic congestion. Diesel exhaust is linked to asthma, leukemia, and cancer, with children being especially vulnerable.

Shockingly, the City of LA has not required an environmental impact report or traffic study for this project.

This development poses severe risks to traffic and pedestrian safety, as the only truck entrance would be at the crosswalk to Hillside Elementary. Trucks would travel over a mile between the distribution center and the freeway, entirely along residential streets, impacting safety and quality of life for miles around.

Lincoln Heights is already among the most polluted neighborhoods in California. The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has identified it as one of the communities most heavily impacted by air pollution, and CalEnviroScreen ranks it in the top 10% of environmentally burdened communities statewide. For decades, the polluted site, contaminated by a toxic underground plume from a former dry-cleaning operation, has been called “the sickland” by neighbors.

Building a diesel distribution center here would be an environmental injustice, adding more toxic diesel pollution to a community already suffering from severe pollution. This project would impact Lincoln Heights, Cypress Park, Montecito Heights, Mount Washington, Sycamore Grove, and Highland Park, endangering tens of thousands of residents across Northeast LA.

We call on the City of Los Angeles to reject the proposed distribution center at 3505 Pasadena Avenue and to protect our community’s right to a safe, clean environment.
