Reject the Proposed Bylaw Banning Feeding Feral Cats in Edmonton

The Issue

Having a deep personal connection to this emerging issue, I can't emphasize enough the importance this matter holds, not only for me but thousands of residents in Edmonton who are involved with animal rescue initiatives. Our city council’s proposed bylaw aims to prohibit the feeding of feral cats. This move is deeply insensitive, considering the role of the province in creating a crisis with pets – cats in particular. Due to disproportionately high pet fees, many people were forced to abandon their pets which led to a surge in the population of feral cats.

Our city government, instead of addressing this issue directly and humanely, has chosen to propose a new regulation that would criminalize acts of compassion: feeding these abandoned, homeless animals. Meanwhile, animals shelters are overburdened with needless overflow because of this created issue.

According to a study by the Alberta Veterinary Medical Association, there are about 60,000 feral cats in Edmonton. Stripping away their main source of food without providing a viable alternative could lead to far-reaching ecological disruption and unnecessary animal suffering.

It's time for the Council to reconsider its approach, focus on the root cause of this issue, lower the excessive pet fees, and work with animal rescue and rights organizations for a comprehensive, compassionate solution. They created this problem, now it is their responsibility to rectify it, not pass the burden onto kind-hearted residents who are just trying to help. We demand a cessation of the proposed bylaw and a move toward meaningful solutions. Sign the petition to stand up for the rights of feral cats, and for the humans who care for them.
