Reject the Proposal to Increase Camping around Sand Pond

The Issue

I grew up fishing, swimming, and camping on Sand Pond in Southern Maine. This small pond was a sanctuary for me, offering a close connection with nature and the environment. The vibrant wildlife ecosystem that once thrived here has been dramatically reduced due to over-camping along its shores. A few years ago, there were an abundance of native turtles, birds of many types and native fish species including horn pout, pickerel, perch and sunfish. Today almost none of these remain.

Now the town is considering a proposal by Michael & Bonnie Patterson DBA Sand Pond Shores LLC that threatens this delicate balance even further - more than doubling the existing camping capacity around Sand Pond. This would devastate any remaining wildlife ecosystem and rob future generations of experiencing the power of vibrant nature as I did.

The impact of human activity on fragile ecosystems is well-documented (source: National Geographic). Over-camping can lead to soil erosion, water pollution from untreated sewage disposal, littering which can harm or kill animals who ingest it, as well as runoff from campsites into wetlands (source: Environmental Protection Agency).

We must protect our natural spaces like Sand Pond not just for their inherent beauty but also for their ecological importance. They are home to various species whose survival is crucial for maintaining biodiversity - something that's increasingly under threat globally (source: World Wildlife Fund).

I urge everyone in Sanford, ME and friends who value Sand Pond to stand against this proposal by signing this petition. Let's ensure we preserve Sand Pond's rich biodiversity and natural beauty for future generations to enjoy as we have done so far!
