Reject the bill being introduced to the South Australian Parliament to ban jumps racing

The issue

In this petition, we are calling on the South Australian government to honour its commitment to allowing the future of jumps racing to be determined by the state's leading racing body, Thoroughbred Racing SA, and the South Australian racing clubs.

We maintain that the future of jumps racing in South Australia should be determined by those who work in and are associated with the state's horse racing industry, rather than pressure groups whose objections to jumps racing are ideological and are based neither on experience nor evidence.

We are therefore urging the South Australian Labor government to honour the commitments that it has made time and time again, both in public and in private—and, most notably, before last year's state election—namely that the future of jumps racing should be determined by TRSA, not government.

Our view is that if it is now the state government's intention to renege on its previous assurances and pre-election promise, South Australian voters should be made aware that they the government is backing down on a clear commitment, and that they are doing so in the full knowledge that this represents a betrayal of a significant section of the South Australian—and Australian—horse racing industry.
