The Issue
Growing up as a bisexual girl in India, I have faced my share of prejudice. However, what has consistently troubled me is the discrimination faced by the Hijra community. Despite the prevailing negative perceptions, my personal encounters with them have always been heartwarming and positive. I recall an incident where I was harassed by a drunken man. In a moment when I felt vulnerable and afraid, it was a group of transgender women who came to my rescue, ensuring I reached home safely. Their show of strength, kindness, and unyielding courage left an indelible mark on me.
This personal experience is why I feel compelled to stand against the recent regressive amendments proposed in the Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, 2026. The bill overlooks the basic rights and dignity that the transgender community in India deserves. In a country that takes pride in its diversity, it is disheartening to see laws being introduced that could further marginalize an already vulnerable community.
Statistics have consistently shown the challenges faced by the transgender community in India. According to a study by the National Human Rights Commission, nearly 92% of transgender individuals are subjected to economic exclusion, and over 50% face violence. Yet, instead of providing better protection measures, the proposed amendments threaten to strip away existing rights.
The amendments hover detrimental clauses that potentially undermine the community's ability to self-identify and access public services. Such provisions not only propagate discrimination but also endanger the safety and well-being of countless individuals who have already been marginalized by society.
It is imperative that we as a society stand united against these regressive changes. We urge lawmakers to reconsider the proposed amendments and instead work towards enacting legislation that recognizes and respects the rights of every transgender person in India. Let us celebrate and support the diversity that enriches our society, rather than creating laws that further divide us.
I call upon all allies and supporters of the LGBTQ+ community to join me in this fight for justice and equality. By signing this petition, you are taking a stand to ensure that the Transgender Persons Amendment Bill, 2026, does not regressively impact the rights of those who need our support the most.
