Life is already hard, and money is becoming more and more difficult to obtain. Living has become a luxury, not a privilege. This plight hits close to home for people like me who struggle daily to make ends meet.

Msunduzi Municipality plans to compound our struggles with their proposed 2025/26 draft tariffs which include a staggering 36% increase in electricity and a 15.5% increase in water tariffs. Such rises are not justifiable under any economic circumstances.

According to Statistics South Africa, as of March 2021, the average electricity cost in Msunduzi Municipality stood at ZAR 1.35 per kWh, and water averaged ZAR 20.35 per kl. These proposed hikes will push the costs upwards of ZAR 1.83 per kWh for electricity and ZAR 23.50 per kl for water (source: Stats SA). This is an undue burden on struggling households who are already finding life expensive.

As conscionable citizens, we strongly oppose this proposed financial strain on the common man and insist on a revision of these projected tariffs. It is not fair to further crush the finances of already struggling households.
