Reject Holly Ridge Development Annexation Request

Reject Holly Ridge Development Annexation Request

The Issue

Holly Ridge Town Council has before it a proposal to annex over 1,200 acres into the town limits for the proposed construction of 2,500 homes by the Holly Ridge Development Corporation. While development may often signal growth and progress, this specific proposal poses a threat to the existing infrastructure, environment, and overall well-being of Holly Ridge and its surrounding areas.

The scale of the proposed development will place a strain on the town's resources. The significant increase in population density could lead to a higher demand for essential services, including water, electricity, waste management, and public safety. These added pressures would inevitably result in increased costs for the town's taxpayers, many of whom may find these financial burdens already overwhelming.

Moreover, the introduction of 2,500 new homes is likely to exacerbate traffic congestion not only in Holly Ridge but also in neighboring regions. The current road infrastructure, already struggling to accommodate daily commutes, will be hard-pressed to deal with the influx of new residents and vehicles, leading to longer travel times and a higher risk of road accidents.

The educational system in Holly Ridge also stands to suffer, as local schools will face overcrowding issues, reducing the quality of education and resources available to students. Law enforcement, and other community services would similarly be strained, diminishing the quality of service provided to residents.

An equally alarming aspect of this development plan is its environmental impact. The proposed construction site includes wetlands, a crucial ecosystem that naturally helps in flood prevention. Building on these lands will likely increase flood risks, endangering both the newly developed area and existing neighborhoods.

Holly Ridge’s unique charm and environment are at stake. The natural landscapes and close-knit community atmosphere may be irrevocably altered by this  development. There are viable alternatives that promote responsible, sustainable growth without compromising the resources and character of Holly Ridge.

We call on the Holly Ridge Town Council to carefully consider these concerns and vote against the annexation proposal. Protect the town’s resources, maintain manageable growth, and safeguard the well-being of current and future residents.

Please show your support and join us in urging the Holly Ridge Town Council to reject this proposal. Sign this petition to ensure that Holly Ridge remains a vibrant, livable community for all.
