Reject Geographic Preferences in Public School Admissions

The Issue

We are two hardworking students: one from the Bronx, the other from Queens. We currently attend one of the top public schools in New York City, a privilege we've earned through our unwavering efforts and academic ambition. But, we wouldn't have had this chance were it not for the district-blind admissions, which allow many like us from outer boroughs a fair shot at quality education. It is from this personal standpoint that we challenge the proposed admissions changes at NYC's elite high schools.

In the upcoming admissions cycle, it has been proposed that 75% of spots will be reserved for students from Manhattan. While Manhattan is, without a doubt, a rich and flourishing borough, this policy, unfortunately, overlooks the diverse academic potential present across all boroughs of NYC. By making this unjust shift, the city’s education department is denying meritorious students from outer boroughs the chance to attend these esteemed institutions.

Our experiences at our school have been enriched by the diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds of our peers, the majority of whom hail from outer boroughs. It is unparalleled diversity like this that broadens perspectives, fosters in-depth discussions, and truly prepares us for a globalized future. This is a crucial factor that cannot be sidelined in the name of satisfying a few unsatisfied parents.

Remember, access to quality education should not be a privilege defined by postcode. Let’s oppose this flawed admission rule and instead promote equal access to educational opportunities for all NYC students, irrespective of their district. Do not let the outer borough children’s potential be overlooked and unrecognized. We urge you to sign this petition, demand fairness and equality in school admissions, and help us protect our diverse and vibrant classrooms.
