The Issue

AB 928, a proposed legislation limiting each acre of land to three roosters, poses a severe threat to the rights and hobbies of livestock owners and animal breeders. Many people, far from being merely owners, are enthusiasts who take pride in raising and breeding chickens, especially roosters. They maintain the health and well-being of these animals, contrary to suppositions that their practices may spread avian flu. The AB 928, under the guise of combating this disease, seems to have a wider objective of controlling the public's right to own livestock.

Imposing a cap on the number of roosters per acre is not only unreasonable but also misinformed, ignoring the nuances of poultry breeding and the endeavours of hobby breeders. Keeping healthy birds is a priority for breeders, suggested by the USDA's poultry census that showed less than 1% of backyard poultry owners reported signs of disease in their flocks (source: USDA NASS, 2017). Moreover, The University of California, Division of Agriculture and Natural Resources asserts that avian flu prevention should focus on biosecurity practices, not arbitrary limits on bird ownership (source: UCANR, 2015).

It is time to stand up for our rights to own and enjoy our hobbies responsibly. Reject AB 928; support the informed and compassionate raising of roosters in our communities. Please, add your signature to this petition to voice your disapproval of AB 928.
