Reject a Trump branded tower in Darwin

Protect the identity, reputation, economy and future of Darwin for generations to come.
Following reporting published by NT News on 23 May, and reports that the Northern Territory Minister for Tourism encouraged a Trump branded high rise development to relocate to Darwin after strong backlash and rejection on the Gold Coast, we call on the Chief Minister to publicly withdraw any support, invitation or facilitation for a Trump branded tower or hotel development in Darwin.
In Darwin, we pride ourselves on our unique identity, tropical lifestyle and vibrant community. Our character, culture, and identity is why people come here to live, work and visit. Our people, economy and prosperity depend on it.
The Gold Coast did not want a Trump branded tower. Territorians feel the same. Such a development would be completely out of scale with Darwin’s existing urban landscape and would fundamentally alter the character of our city.
The proposal of a Trump branded high rise tower threatens to overshadow and dilute the authentic character of our city and negatively impact a struggling tourism industry that depends on our unique character and identity.
Territorians are voicing their concerns. We do not want Darwin turned into a billboard for imported political branding and culture war symbolism. We call on our Chief Minister and Minister for Tourism to protect our reputation, cultural integrity and identity which are vital to our prosperity, cohesion and way of life.
Darwin’s tourism industry is already fragile and heavily dependent on reputation, identity and visitor confidence. Visitors come to the Northern Territory for its natural beauty and unique culture, not imported political branding. Developments in Darwin that are symbolic of foreign and divisive political identity risks damaging a tourism market and economy that have already faced significant hardship and future uncertainty.
Territorians support investment, development and economic growth. But development in the Territory should strengthen The Territory’s identity and cohesion, support Territory businesses and put Territorians first. We deserve thoughtful progress that reflects the needs and values of the people who live here and enhances what makes Darwin unique, rather than eroding it.
We call on the Chief Minister, Minister for Tourism and Development Consent Authority to stand by the wishes of the community and reject any Trump branded development proposal for Darwin.
