Growing up in a community that has been directly affected by crime, I have always held deep concerns about both our safety and the integrity of our justice system. The rapid increase in prison population, coupled with the limited resources available, has made prison overcrowding a critical issue demanding immediate attention and action from our government.

Prison overcrowding is not just a numbers issue—it's a safety and human rights concern. As prisons operate beyond their capacity, they become breeding grounds for violence, health crises, and ineffective rehabilitation. Reports from the Ministry of Justice highlight that our prisons are operating at 112% of their capacity, significantly jeopardising both inmate welfare and staff safety. With escalating costs and increasing recidivism rates, the current system demands innovative solutions.

Reintroducing and expanding the use of electronic tagging monitoring systems for prisoners and individuals on early release presents a tangible solution. These systems provide a viable method for alleviating overcrowding, helping to reduce government spending on incarceration while maintaining a strong focus on public safety. Countries such as Sweden and the United Kingdom have effectively employed electronic tagging alongside their incarceration strategies, allowing for more efficient monitoring and reduction in repeat offences.

Electronic tagging technology has advanced significantly, incorporating GPS tracking and real-time alerts, ensuring that those serving sentences outside traditional prison walls are closely monitored. This instills a sense of accountability among offenders while providing peace of mind to the public. Importantly, it offers a chance for rehabilitation back into society, without the immediate pressures of prison life.

We urge the government to commit to this sustainable approach by:

1. Mandating the use of electronic tags for non-violent offenders and those qualifying for early release.
2. Investing in updated technology and infrastructure to ensure robust and reliable monitoring.
3. Training law enforcement and social services staff to manage and operate these systems effectively.
