Crime rates are escalating at an unprecedented level amongst our youth in Lykens Valley. Our community is now far from the times 100 years ago when our young men were occupied with the hard but rewarding labor of coal mining. The coal industry played a pivotal role in the growth of Lykens Valley, bringing employment and regional development. The subsequent decline of the industry incredibly impacted our local economy and, importantly, our young population.

A reintroduction of coal mining in the Lykens Valley, may simultaneously tackle our economic and social problems. It will provide secure jobs, foster a sense of community and trade skills, and deter the youth from rising criminal activities.

Moreover, coal still forms an integral part of our nation's energy mix, contributing to about 24% of electricity generation in 2019 [U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA)]. Therefore, revitalizing the coal industry is potentially beneficial on a regional and national level.
