Reinstatement of the old Animal Services

Reinstatement of the old Animal Services
The Issue
We call on the MES to deliver services that meet the needs of their constituency to create a healthier, safer and more humane city for people and animals.
We want MES to include in their animal services:
- Proper enforcement of animal bylaws
- Collection of roaming/stray dogs and cats either running at large or contained by a citizen
- Intake and house and care for all roaming stray dogs and cats
- Upon arrival into MES facility, conduct an intake exam by a qualified animal care staff to identify any medical abnormality and seek immediate veterinarian care when exam notes any abnormality
- During the intake exam, perform identification search and attempt to find the owner
- During intake exams vaccinate, dispense internal/external parasite control to all animals according to standard animal shelters practices and best practices for kennels to avoid disease spread and relieve animals of distress
- Immediately relieve animals of physical or mental distress by seeking veterinarian care
- Provide veterinary care when needed and up until they are no longer being housed at MEC
- All euthanasia decisions need to be done with a committee consisting of a veterinarian and a behaviour consultant and/or a certified trainer and animal care staff
- Adhere to OMFRA standards and best practices in animal care and facility management
- Adhere to industry best practices for cleaning, disease and infection control. Proper PPE to be utilized. This is to prevent the spread of diseases.
- Adhere to all housing, sheltering, and animal care standards and legislation
- Build and maintain cooperative relationships with outside partners to support rehoming efforts, while being responsible for the financial burden of veterinarian care costs. Rescues and other adoption agencies cannot be expected to absorb costs from their own programs.
- That a Thunder Bay Animal Care Committee be established that includes all relevant stake holders such as veterinarians, pet families, adoption agencies and other interested stake holder be included for monthly meetings to discuss accomplishments and areas for improvement with regards to MES services and collobrative efforts in the community to create a healthier city for pets and people.
