Reinstatement of Smokey the Bear in James City

Reinstatement of Smokey the Bear in James City
The Issue
To:
North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT)
U.S. Forest Service – Croatan National Forest
Craven County Officials
Subject: Request for the restoration and relocation of the Smokey the Bear statue removed during I-70 highway reconstruction
We, the undersigned residents, visitors, and supporters of New Bern, James City, and Craven County, respectfully submit this petition to request the restoration and reinstallation of the Smokey the Bear statue that once stood prominently along Highway I-70 in James City, in front of the Croatan National Forest Ranger Station.
The Smokey Bear statue was removed during the Highway I-70 reconstruction project. While we understand and appreciate the need for infrastructure improvements and public safety, we believe the permanent loss of this landmark would be a disservice to our community and to the legacy of forest conservation that Smokey the Bear represents.
For decades, this statue served as:
A recognizable local landmark and point of pride for James City and New Bern
A symbol of wildfire prevention and environmental stewardship
A welcoming visual reminder of the Croatan National Forest and its importance
A piece of shared community history and cultural identity
Smokey the Bear is an enduring national icon, and his presence at the Croatan National Forest Ranger Station was especially meaningful given the forest’s role in conservation, education, and recreation in Eastern North Carolina. Many residents and travelers associate this statue with childhood memories, family photos, and their connection to the natural beauty of our region.
We respectfully request that:
The Smokey the Bear statue be restored, preserved, and protected, if it is not already; and
The statue be reinstalled at or near its original location, or at another safe, visible, and appropriate site in James City or near the Croatan National Forest Ranger Station, in coordination with highway safety standards.
We believe that through collaboration between NCDOT, the U.S. Forest Service, and local government, a solution can be found that balances both transportation needs and our community's heritage.
Thank you for your time, consideration, and commitment to preserving the history, character, and environmental values of our area.
