I am writing this as someone who has witnessed the ups and downs of competitive wordlers. The sense of achievement that comes from competing against others and striving to improve our skills has been invaluable. I strongly believe in the saying, "To be the best, you have to beat the best." However, I feel we are being denied the opportunity to be our best selves with the recent discontinuation of the weekly Wordle rankings.

These rankings, highlighting everyone's scores alongside weekly updates, were more than just scores. They epitomized the spirit of competition, camaraderie, and aspiration. For many of us, this was something we looked forward to, something that laid the groundwork for our impending success each week.

A 2017 study in the Journal of Sports Sciences confirmed that regular feedback and recognition are critical for improving performance and maintaining motivation in competitive environments (Pennsylvania State University, 2017). Thus, by eliminating the weekly Wordle rankings, we are missing out on a fundamental motivational tool.
