Reinstate weekly general waste collection in South Gippsland
The issue
Living in South Gippsland, it has become increasingly challenging to manage household waste effectively due to the South Gippsland Shire Council's decision to limit red bin collections to a fortnightly schedule. Like many others in our community, I've experienced the frustrations and genuine concerns that come with having our general waste sit accumulating for weeks on end. Overflowing bins are becoming a common sight, leading to health and safety worries not just for adults, but more importantly for our children and pets.
The decision to cut back on general waste collections has inevitably led to the buildup of refuse between collection cycles. We’re all aware of how overflow and exposed trash attract pests, significantly increasing the likelihood of rodent invasions and the spread of disease. Additionally, this situation creates a prime opportunity for illegal rubbish dumping, a problem that endangers our environment and tarnishes our beautiful region.
While the introduction of the FOGO (Food Organics and Garden Organics) collection is indeed a positive step toward sustainable waste management, it cannot effectively replace the weekly general waste service. Many items that must be discarded don't qualify for FOGO processing and are left to pile up, only adding to our woes. The current measures are insufficient and pose potential risks to our community's wellbeing.
Our request is simple and reasonable: reinstate weekly general waste collections. This adjustment would ease the burden on local families, improve sanitary conditions, and contribute to a cleaner, safer environment for all of us. It’s crucial that the Council acknowledges the voices of residents who feel unheard and addresses these pressing concerns that affect our everyday lives.
We urge the South Gippsland Shire Council to listen to its constituents who, like myself, are voicing these complaints consistently across the region. Bring back the weekly collection service for general waste and help us maintain the quality of life that we cherish in South Gippsland. Let's stand together for a cleaner, healthier community.
