The Issue

In the quaint and beautiful region of Cowichan Valley, BC, residents are currently facing a growing challenge this summer—garbage collection schedules have been reduced, and it is causing more problems than anticipated. Living in Area I of the CVRD, specifically Meades Creek and Youbou, I have personally witnessed how the reduced frequency of garbage collection has become an unexpected magnet for local wildlife, especially bears.

The change to bi-weekly pickups has left our garbage sitting too long, emitting odors that attract bears into our neighborhoods. This situation poses significant risks not only for the safety of residents but also for the bears themselves, who may become habituated to seeking food in residential areas. This increase in human-bear interactions could lead to unfortunate consequences that no one desires.

The primary goal of this petition is to urge the Cowichan Valley Regional District to revert to the previous schedule of weekly garbage pickups during the summer months. Not only is this essential for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation, but it is crucial for ensuring the safety of both the community and the wildlife that inhabits the region.

Data from wildlife management studies indicate that bears are more likely to wander into residential areas when easy food sources, like garbage, are available. The increased presence of bears can lead to escalated interventions by wildlife authorities, often resulting in the relocation or, in worst-case scenarios, the euthanization of the bear. By restoring weekly garbage pickups, we significantly reduce these risks by removing the attractants before they cause harm.

Moreover, weekly garbage collection will align with the eco-friendly practices encouraged by our community, preventing the overflow of waste and reducing the potential for health hazards. It addresses the concerns of residents who strive to keep the community a safe and flourishing environment for families to enjoy.

Recent surveys and feedback from residents clearly indicate a strong preference for the previous weekly collection schedule, especially in the warmer months, as it helps manage waste more efficiently and preserves the community's harmony with nature.

Signing this petition is a step towards bringing back an essential public service that ensures a safer and cleaner environment for everyone. Join me in calling for the Cowichan Valley Regional District to listen to our plea and make the necessary changes for the betterment of our community. Together, we can make a difference. Please sign this petition and support our cause today.
