Reinstate Victor at Queen's University of Charlotte after Unjust Suspension

Reinstate Victor at Queen's University of Charlotte after Unjust Suspension
The Issue
On May 6, 2024, Victor Tvistholm Jorgensen, an international student from Denmark, lit a small fire in the courtyard of Albright Hall as part of his 20th birthday celebration. This fire, which involved burning a few old books, was a reflection of Danish traditions, where outdoor fires are commonly used to mark birthdays and annual events. However, this cultural misunderstanding led to Victor’s suspension from the university.
Victor is not only a dedicated student but also an athlete, excelling in cross-country and track. He has made meaningful contributions to the university community through his academic performance, athletic achievements, and volunteer efforts. His actions on May 6 were not intended to cause harm or damage, and no property was destroyed beyond the items used for the small fire.
Suspending Victor for a single lapse in judgment, especially one driven by cultural practices, is a harsh response that jeopardizes his academic, athletic, and visa status. This incident offers an opportunity for Queen’s University to demonstrate compassion, cultural understanding, and inclusiveness.
Please sign this petition to support Victor’s reinstatement, recognizing that mistakes—especially those born of cultural differences—should be met with empathy and education, not suspension. Together, let’s uphold the values of forgiveness and diversity within our university community.
