Reinstate Unlawfully Separated Firefighters in San Francisco

The Issue

As a prior longtime resident of San Francisco, I am deeply concerned about the recent termination of 13 dedicated firefighters who have faithfully served our community for many years. These brave individuals risked their lives daily to protect our great city, and it is unjust that they have been unlawfully separated from their positions from the City of San Francisco vaccination policy and state of emergency, that has been ultimately rescinded at both state and city level. 

In October 2021, Chief Jeanine Nicholson of San Francisco Fire Department threatened that employees must take Covid-19 vaccinations as a condition of employment or would be subject to termination. These firefighters had sincerely held objections to taking the available Covid-19 vaccinations and sought religious exemptions or accommodations. However, all their requests were denied without proper consideration or due process. This has not only resulted in the loss of invaluable experience and expertise within our firefighting force but has also infringed upon their rights as individuals.  

It is important to acknowledge that these firefighters have selflessly put themselves in harm's way countless times for the betterment of our community. They deserve fair treatment and respect for their deeply-held beliefs, especially when seeking religious exemptions or accommodations.

According to Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, employers are required to provide reasonable accommodations for employees' sincerely held religious beliefs unless doing so would cause undue hardship on the employer. In this case, it is evident that alternative arrangements could have been made without compromising public safety or burdening other personnel.

Furthermore, terminating these firefighters without proper due process violates fundamental principles of justice. They should have been given an opportunity to present their case before an impartial body and explore potential compromises that would allow them to continue serving while respecting their personal convictions.

By signing this petition, we call upon the authorities in San Francisco to reinstate these unlawfully separated firefighters immediately. We demand a thorough review of each firefighter's request for religious exemption or accommodation with fairness and impartiality. Additionally, we urge policymakers to establish clear guidelines regarding vaccine mandates that respect individual rights while ensuring public safety during emergencies.
