My son, (like many other children), has been living with a MAGEC rod in his spine for the past five years. This revolutionary device allowed him to undergo just one operation and live a normal life without constant surgical interventions. However, now that his rod needs replacing, we are being told that the only option is a Harrington rod - an antiquated device which requires an operation every six months.

The use of Harrington rods is not only physically taxing on young patients but also emotionally draining for them and their families. The constant cycle of surgeries can lead to complications and significantly impact their quality of life. On the other hand, MAGEC rods have proven to be safe and effective in treating spinal deformities in children.

According to a study published in The Spine Journal (2016), patients treated with MAGEC rods had fewer surgeries compared to those treated with traditional growing rods (an average of 1 vs 4). This clearly demonstrates that reinstating the use of MAGEC rods would reduce surgical interventions and improve patient outcomes.

We urge healthcare providers and policymakers to consider this plea from parents like us who want nothing more than our children's well-being. Please reinstate the use of MAGEC rods so our children can continue living their lives without fear or pain from continuous operations.
