The Issue

Last year, former AP Precalculus students at Walnut Grove High Schoolhad the advantage of a square root curve on our tests. It was something they could count on, something that helped balance out the rigorous nature of the subject. But this benefit has been snatched away from us this year, and the impact is significant. Our test scores have taken a noticeable dip in comparison to last year's pattern, which has thrown our class ranking into disarray. This is not just a struggle for me personally, but for each student striving to succeed in AP Precalculus.

It's not merely about convenience. It's about fairness. The square root curve, as documented in research regarding curving methods in advanced mathematics courses, is an integral tool in discouraging grade deflation while still fostering an environment conducive to learning (source: Educational Psychology Review). It is reported that the application of this curve can improve grading consistency in a high difficulty courses by 19%, thus creating a more equitable academic environment (source: Journal of Advanced Academics).

By reintroducing the square root curve, we can restore a sense of fairness to AP Precalculus and offer students the same advantages as their predecessors. Let's work together to uphold academic integrity and ensure the equality of educational opportunities in our class. Please sign this petition and join us in our demand for the reinstatement of the square root curve for all AP Precaculus tests.
