Reinstate the School Song at Lakeland High School (Suffolk, VA)

The Issue

The school song at Lakeland High School in Suffolk, VA has always been a symbol of unity and pride for the Cavalier family. The song, written by Lakeland students has been sung over the years and was a tradition that brought all Cavaliers together, especially on graduation day when seniors would sing it in unison before moving their tassels and tossing their caps in the air.

Due to COVID precautions, this beloved tradition was put on hold and unfortunately has not been reinstated since. This is deeply personal for many alumni and even current longtime staff who believe the school song is an integral part of the Cavalier culture. It's more than just a melody; it's a legacy passed down through generations of students and was unique to Lakeland as none of the other schools had a school song.

We understand that safety measures were crucial during the time the song was removed, and safety should still always come first, but as we've now resumed some normalcy, we think it's possible to bring back this cherished tradition without compromising health protocols. We respectfully ask the administration of Lakeland High School to consider reinstating the school song. Even if not every day, perhaps some compromise, for example Fridays.

This request may seem perplexing to current students and staff who may be unaware of this tradition pre-COVID. Even those who may have grumbled over listening to it every morning proudly sang it with a smile by graduation. We want future generations to experience this unique part of being a Cavalier, the same way alumni look back fondly at their time at Lakeland High School.

Let the Cavalier family come together once again in singing our school song with pride and unity as we have done for so many years before. Please sign this petition if you support reinstating the school song of Lakeland High School (Suffolk, VA).
