Reinstate the River Street Streetcar Service in Savannah

The Issue

I am an admirer of the beautiful city of Savannah, and while I may not be a resident, I believe in the cultural significance and charm that the River Street Streetcar adds to this historic city. The streetcar service began its journey in 2009, becoming an integral part of Savannah's identity much like SEPTA's Route 15 trolley is to Philadelphia. In Philadelphia, they recognized this importance and restored their historic trolley cars in 2005. However, our beloved River Street Streetcar was suspended indefinitely in 2015 due to ongoing construction.

The absence of this iconic mode of transport has left a void for both residents and visitors alike. It is more than just a means to get from point A to B; it is a symbol of Savannah's rich history and commitment towards preserving its heritage.

Unfortunately, there has been no timeline given for when service will be restored on the River Street line. This leaves us all waiting with bated breath for when we can once again hear the familiar clatter along our streets.

We urge those responsible - city planners, transportation officials - anyone who can influence this decision - to recognize how vital these services are not only as practical transportation but also as important symbols of our city's identity.

Let us bring back our cherished streetcars! Let us restore what makes Savannah truly unique! Please sign this petition if you too believe that it’s time for the return of our beloved River Street Streetcar Service.
