Reinstate the Right to Display Pride Flags in Troy Schools

The Issue

We urge the administration of Troy Schools, specifically the International Academy East, to reinstate the right to fly Pride flags. The freedom to express one's identity openly is an essential aspect of educational institutions, promoting inclusivity, acceptance, and respect. Unfortunately, this right has been taken away from the school community, leaving many students, faculty, and parents distressed. Section 3012-AR which addresses Flags on School Property and in Classrooms effectively removes the ability of our school and teachers to hang/fly pride flags. It is essential that LGBTQ+ students will be permitted the right to learn in supportive and comfortable environments just as any other student.

According to the Human Rights Campaign, safe and supportive school environments contribute significantly to the overall well-being of LGBTQ+ students, which Pride flags can facilitate (Human Rights Campaign, 2021). Notably, a study by Marisa E. Marraccini and her colleagues pointed out that LGBTQ+ youth and their school environments play a significant role in suicide rates (Marraccini, 2021).

By not allowing Pride flags, the school is indirectly suppressing the voices, rights, and well-being of LGBTQ+ students. This act contradicts the core value of American public education, promoting freedom of speech as upheld by the Tinker v. Des Moines Independent Community School District Supreme Court case.

The importance of this event might be dismissed as insignificant, but subtle changes will eventually erode LGBTQ+ rights and visibility. Leading to toxic and hateful environments.

We ask for immediate action from the Board of Education to restore this right, which is not only a matter of free expression but a necessary step for the well-being of our students. Sign this petition to encourage Troy Schools to allow Pride flags to be displayed in school and in classrooms once again, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all.
