Reinstate the Letter Grading System in British Columbia Schools

The Issue

The current grading system in British Columbia, which categorizes students as EMERGING, DEVELOPING, PROFICIENT or EXTENDING, has been a subject of concern for many parents, students and educators. This system lacks clarity and can be confusing for both students and parents who are accustomed to the traditional letter grades- A, A+, A-, B, B+, B-, C, C+,C-, D, E, F. The traditional grading system provides a clear understanding of where a student stands academically. According to research by the University of Alberta (2011), letter grades provide more precise information about student achievement and are easier to understand than descriptive feedbacks. Therefore we urge the Ministry of Education in British Columbia to reconsider its decision and reinstate the letter grading system in our schools.
