The Issue

Like many families in our community, we have been deeply affected by the sudden prohibition of launching personal watercraft at Lazaretto Creek public boat ramp. Water-based recreational activities are vital for a sense of community and connection with nature. The ban was executed overnight without any public consultation. We, the jet-ski owners of our island, are left without a public place to launch our craft and thus enjoy our marine environment. The potential impact of a jet-ski is far less than that left by the much larger craft that can be legally launched from the ramp.

According to the National Marine Manufacturers Association, jet-skiing is enjoyed by more than 20 million Americans, fostering community engagement and promoting physical activity [Source: NMMA]. Denying us, and countless others like us, arbitrary access to the very recreation that shapes our island community isn't fair or in line with public interest.

We urge the relevant authorities to reconsider this decision, taking into account the importance it holds for our community's identity and cohesion. We call for meaningful consultation with the affected residents before making such decisions. We believe that practical solutions can be found to ensure safe and enjoyable use of our shared marine resources.
