The Issue

In June 2025, DJ Linton, experienced the devastating impact of being laid off from his position as a Health Unit Service Coordinator (HUSC) at the UCSD Medical Center's Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU). For many years, he has dedicated himself to supporting the critically important work of nurses and physicians in providing world-class care to our patients. Since his departure, he has been in constant contact with former colleagues, and the resounding message is clear: the absence of the HUSC position is severely impacting both working conditions and patient safety.

At the SICU, every moment is crucial, and coordination is key to ensuring the well-being and recovery of our patients. The HUSC serves as the backbone of this coordination, assisting in managing administrative tasks, streamlining communication between staff and families, and supporting the efficient running of the unit. The feedback from hospital staff indicates that, without this role, the vital administrative load falls heavily on the nurses and trauma technicians, drawing their attention away from direct patient care.

Furthermore, patient and family satisfaction scores have noticeably dropped since the removal of the HUSC position. Families have expressed frustration over delayed responses and a perceived lack of communication regarding their loved ones' care. This is not reflective of the high standards UCSD Medical Center is known for and is a clear indication that the system is overstressed.

The morale among the SICU staff is at an all-time low. They work tirelessly under already challenging conditions and, without the support provided by the HUSC role, the pressure is becoming unsustainable. There is a real risk of burnout, which could lead to an eventual shortage of skilled and passionate healthcare professionals, further endangering patient care.

We call upon the administration of UCSD Medical Center to take immediate action to reinstate the HUSC position within the SICU. Restoring this role will not only enhance the work environment for healthcare professionals but will ensure that patients receive the utmost quality of care they deserve.
